Human Shaped Animal

Apricity Gallery is honored to host Human Shaped Animal on April 5th as the featured artist for First Friday!

HSA: Sprawling out from geometric roots and deliberate angles, shocks of color and swaths of rich grain find their own path, transforming a once barren desert of expression into an abstractly organic landscape reaching out with living fingers. Expanding in multiple directions from her experience as a painter and muralist, Human Shaped Animal creates a striking bouquet of multimedium pieces. By cross-pollinating her original designs with digital fabrication and live plants she has reaped a mind-bending garden of complex form and moving stillness.

Natalie Jenkins: January First Friday

Apricity Gallery welcomes Natalie Jenkins as a new resident artist to the Tannery Arts Center. She will be sharing space with Sarah Bianco at Apricity to create and display. Samples of both their work will be up for First Friday, January 6th from 5:00-9:00

Natalie Jenkins: Working primarily in sculpture, Natalie Jenkins explores the mediation of ‘seeing’ through physical obstruction and perceptual confusion. She draws inspiration from a broad palette of architecture, myth, allegory, and domestic custom to explore the abstractions underpinning cultural tradition with the acknowledgment that these structures are the bases of subjective vantage points. Surrealist in their representations, the objects are darkly goofy and prop-like as they are constructed from simple materials such as papier-mâché. Visually uniting the work is a thematic grid and/or pattern to suggest a system of order and undefinable space. There is an inside/outside quality to each sculpture; one must view the work through external punctures into its interior in order to piece together the entirety of the composition. Each work plays with how vision, memory, and imagination are conflated into an intelligible unified form.

Blind the Sun: DIVINE BEAST

Blind the sun or Allison Marie Garcia (she/her) is a multi media artist with an emphasis on watercolor and ink. The unruly nature of watercolor paired with the bold presence of ink lends itself to the psychedelic and sometimes satiric exploration of our individual perceptions of a moral experience and our idea of “the devil”.

Sarah Bianco will also be showing painting and prints, along with live music!

First Friday: Andrew Purchin

How can the canvas be the loving awareness that holds struggle and joy and everything in between?

“This selection of recent listening drawings and paintings are sourced from dancing with the ocean, supporting people on zoom and seeing the inherent good in me, you and all people while conversing and painting at the Benchlands encampment for the unhoused. Vulnerable lines, washes and splats track that which is tender and softens that which over protects. The paint, pen, pencil and crayon lets something in me relax as I attend and befriend what may be difficult to face.”

Andrew Purchin is an interdisciplinary artist who practices painting, interactive art interventions and psychotherapy. He connects to his body as he creates at sites of devastation and celebration.

His new project: What’s Home? Creative Listening Across Differences will result in ten documentaries telling unique stories of how ten Santa Cruz-based artists collaborate with the housed and unhoused to make new art, music, dance and theater. See Whatshome.org

March First Friday: Chelsea Merritt

Chelsea began collaging in her current style around 2003, and has found it to be a mystical and therapeutic process. She grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and took residence in the mountains there for a few years later in life. She spent 5 years in Mal Pais, Costa Rica, and many years, in different eras, in California. Her artwork reflects her love for nature, healing arts, the cosmos, transformation, cool creatures, and all things beautiful...light, dark and everything in between. She currently resides in Bonny Doon, and feels blessed to live so close to the sea, while being cradled in the majestic redwoods, with the soothing sounds of owls at night, and many lovely humans dwelling amongst the landscape.

First Friday: Mark Yanowsky

Apricity Gallery is pleased to feature paintings by Mark Yanowsky and Sarah Bianco. These two artists have had a mutual admiration for eachother’s work over the years, and influences can be seen between them within their palettes and use of space.

“In some of these paintings I’m going for a bit of experimentation with subject and have gotten into some dinosaur drawing. I don’t know why exactly…not questioning it. (Maybe I’m the dinosaur? Maybe it’s just whimsy?) Times keep changing, our world makes us fully aware of our mortality and impermanence. My art has always been a contemplation of these themes. I hope this art offers a moment of meditation on these thoughts. For those not so into dinosaurs, I’ve included some of my other seascapes and wood assemblages. Again, thanks for taking the time to come see some art.”

December First Friday

December First Friday

Featured Artist, designer and micro business owner, Amanda Prairiewind Hess, works in multiple mediums. She takes great pride in bringing a fresh, futuristic, art-centric edge to her wearable art pieces.

After earning her degree in Studio Arts in 2002, she focused on creating and selling her large-scale paintings. She spent years upon years daydreaming of an art business that integrated the other mediums she had great passion for ::: clothing+fabric design and metal smithing. At just the right time, in the spring of 2017, her dreams came to fruition in the form of EVerything & NOthing. The name came to her around 2AM and represents duality on many levels, something very familiar to her as a double Gemini w/ Capricorn rising.

The creative process for all three mediums is very much an intuitive one, full of twists and turns and open to shifts. No detail is overlooked when it comes to quality and responsible sourcing. She is passionate about purchasing materials from reputable, sustainable, responsible and, when possible, American companies with similar values. She strives to create straight forward, clean designs, without sacrificing interest and uniqueness.

Amanda thrives on creating and sharing her interpretation of beauty with a community who values and appreciates it.

*Bonus Artists this month include:

Dana Peters, cut paper lanterns; Human Shaped Animal (Rachel Barnes), paintings/planters ; & Sarah Bianco, paintings

November First Friday: Gazelle Walker

Gazelle Walker’s artwork addresses the relationships between self and environment; nature and technology. She creates toy-like cardboard sculptures and acrylic gouache paintings in a style that melds folk, pop and psychedelic art. Sustainability is a core theme of her practice as she explores less wasteful ways to create art through use of recycled art materials. “Make it interesting, make it funny, make it weird” is the motto sung throughout her works.

First Friday Featured Artist: Scott Rasmann

First Friday Featured Artist: Scott Rasmann

Apricity Gallery will be featuring the work of guest artist and Tannery resident, Scott Rasmann.

Driven by symbols and often culled from dreams, the landscapes that one sees in his textured paintings come from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the deserts of Arizona. Recently Scott has been inspired by stone figures found in cemeteries: angels, mourners, and ghosts. These emotional narratives now haunt the canvases.

"Creating these paintings helps me keep them out of the shadows of my mind and exposed to the daylight where they can hint at their stories." ~Scott Rasmann

Sarah Bianco, Apricity Gallery's in-house artist, will also be showing recent paintings.

This exhibit will be showing for one night only so hope to you can join us!
